Ingredients
Scale
Roasted Garlic
- 8–10 garlic cloves
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- Pinch of salt
Garlic Butter Custard
- ½ cup butter, melted (113g)
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup milk (60g)
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp paprika
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
Bread and Topping
- 12 King’s Hawaiian Original Hawaiian Sheet Rolls, kept in full sheet form (or replace with a French baguette of similar size)
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- Chopped parsley and chili flakes for serving
Instructions
- Roast the Garlic: Preheat the oven to 400°F. Toss the peeled garlic cloves with olive oil and a pinch of salt. Place them in a mini oven-safe pot with a lid or cover with foil, and bake for about 20 minutes until soft and golden. Remove and mash the roasted garlic with a fork, then set aside.
- Prepare Garlic Butter Custard: In a bowl, combine the mashed roasted garlic, melted butter, egg, milk, salt, paprika, and chopped fresh parsley. Whisk thoroughly until fully blended.
- Toast the Bread: Lower the oven temperature to 350°F. Using a sharp knife, divide the sheet of bread rolls into two halves. Place them on a large baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes until they become lightly golden and crispy.
- Coat Bread with Custard: Transfer the garlic butter custard to a larger pan. Carefully dip the toasted bread sheets into the custard, ensuring all sides are well coated.
- Bake the Coated Bread: Place the coated bread back on the baking sheet and bake at 350°F for 15-18 minutes until golden brown.
- Add Cheese and Broil: Evenly sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the baked bread. Switch the oven setting to broil or grill, then broil the bread for about 5 minutes until the cheese melts and turns golden brown.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove the bread from the oven, garnish with chopped fresh parsley and chili flakes. Slice, serve warm, and enjoy!
Notes
- You can substitute King’s Hawaiian rolls with a French baguette of similar size if preferred.
- For a spicier version, increase the amount of chili flakes or add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the custard.
- Ensure the bread is dipped carefully to avoid it becoming too soggy; a thorough but gentle coating is best.
- Broiling the cheese ensures a bubbly, golden crust. Watch closely to prevent burning.
- This recipe yields 12 servings, perfect for parties or family gatherings.
