Description

This Caramelized Onion and Gruyere Dip is a rich, creamy, and savory appetizer perfect for parties or cozy gatherings. Sweet caramelized onions combined with smooth cream cheese, tangy sour cream and mayo, seasoned with garlic and thyme, then baked under a layer of melted Gruyere create a deliciously irresistible dip. Serve warm with crackers, bread, or vegetable sticks for an elegant snack everyone will love.

Ingredients

Scale

Onions and Cooking

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Dip Base

  • 1 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise

Cheese and Seasoning

  • 1 cup Gruyere cheese, shredded
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon thyme (fresh or dried)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: Heat the olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and stir occasionally, cooking them on low heat for about 20-25 minutes until they are soft and have turned a rich golden brown color, releasing their natural sweetness.
  2. Prepare the Dip Mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise. Mix until smooth and creamy. Add the garlic powder, thyme, salt, and pepper, then blend well ensuring all the seasonings are evenly distributed.
  3. Combine and Bake: Fold the caramelized onions gently into the creamy mixture. Transfer this combined dip into a baking dish and evenly top with the shredded Gruyere cheese. Place it in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) and bake for 20 minutes, or until the dip is bubbling hot and the cheese has melted to a golden, slightly crispy top.
  4. Serve: Remove the dip from the oven and let it cool slightly for 5 minutes. Serve it warm with your favorite dippers such as crusty bread slices, crackers, or fresh vegetables like celery and carrots for dipping.

Notes

  • For best results, slice onions uniformly to ensure even caramelization.
  • Use room temperature cream cheese for easier mixing.
  • Fresh thyme adds a brighter herb flavor, but dried thyme works well too.
  • This dip can be prepared ahead; caramelize onions and mix the base in advance, then combine and bake when ready to serve.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat gently before serving.
