Ingredients
Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
Wet Ingredients
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1 large egg
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
For Frying
- Oil (for frying, about 2 to 3 inches deep)
Cinnamon Sugar Coating
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
Instructions
- Prepare Dry Ingredients: In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, salt, nutmeg, cinnamon, and baking powder. Set this mixture aside while you prepare the wet ingredients and cinnamon sugar coating.
- Mix Cinnamon Sugar Coating: In a small bowl, combine the 1/2 cup granulated sugar with 2 teaspoons cinnamon. Stir to mix well and set aside for coating the donut holes after frying.
- Heat the Oil: Pour oil into a large, deep skillet or pot to a depth of about 2 to 3 inches. Heat the oil to between 360°F and 375°F. Use a clip-on pot thermometer for accuracy or test readiness by adding a drop of water—if it sizzles, the oil is hot enough.
- Prepare Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the whole milk, egg, granulated sugar, and melted butter until fully combined.
- Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir thoroughly until just combined, being careful not to overmix as the batter will be very sticky.
- Scoop the Dough: Using two spoons or a small cookie scoop sprayed with non-stick spray, scoop out about 2 teaspoons of batter to form dough balls.
- Fry the Donut Holes: Carefully drop 5 to 7 dough balls at a time into the hot oil. Fry for 1 to 2 minutes on each side, flipping as needed. The donut holes will spread and roll in the oil; avoid overcrowding to ensure even cooking.
- Drain and Coat: Once golden brown and cooked through, remove the donut holes with a slotted spoon and immediately toss them in the cinnamon sugar coating to ensure maximum adherence.
- Serve: Serve the donut holes immediately while warm for the best taste and texture.
Notes
- Use a candy or clip-on thermometer to maintain oil temperature between 360°F and 375°F for perfect frying results.
- Do not overcrowd the skillet to prevent the donut holes from cooking unevenly.
- For easy scooping, spray your cookie scoop or spoons with a non-stick cooking spray.
- If you don’t have whole milk, you can substitute with 2% milk for similar results.
- Serve immediately; the donut holes are best enjoyed fresh and warm as the cinnamon sugar coating sticks best.
