Baked to golden perfection, it’s a satisfying family-friendly recipe that’s straightforward to prepare.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat Filling

  • 1 lbs Ground beef or lamb (choose lean for a rich base)
  • 1 medium Onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves Garlic (minced)
  • 2 medium Carrots (diced small)
  • 1 cup Frozen peas (add towards the end)
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (for tangy flavor)
  • 1 cup Beef broth (to keep filling moist)
  • Salt (to taste, for seasoning)
  • Pepper (to taste, for seasoning)

Mash Topping

  • 2 lbs Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes (boiled and mashed)
  • 4 tbsp Butter (for richness)
  • 1/2 cup Milk or cream (warmed for mashing)
  • 1 cup Grated cheddar cheese (for topping)
  • Fresh herbs like parsley or thyme (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to prepare for baking the shepherd’s pie.
  2. Brown Meat and Aromatics: In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground meat along with the finely chopped onion and minced garlic. Cook for about 5 minutes until the meat is no longer pink and onions are softened.
  3. Simmer Vegetables and Sauce: Add diced carrots, frozen peas, Worcestershire sauce, and beef broth to the meat mixture. Simmer gently for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the mixture to thicken slightly.
  4. Boil Potatoes: While the filling simmers, boil the peeled and chopped potatoes in salted water until fork-tender, about 15 minutes. Drain well.
  5. Mash Potatoes: Mash the cooked potatoes thoroughly with butter, warmed milk or cream, and season with salt and pepper until the mash is fluffy and creamy.
  6. Assemble Pie: Spread the meat and vegetable filling evenly in a baking dish. Dollop and spread the mashed potatoes evenly on top of the filling to cover it completely.
  7. Bake: Place the assembled shepherd’s pie in the preheated oven and bake uncovered for 20 minutes until the potato topping develops golden brown peaks.
  8. Garnish and Serve: Remove from oven, sprinkle freshly chopped thyme or parsley on top for an aromatic finish, and serve warm to enjoy a comforting meal.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground beef with ground lamb for a traditional flavor twist.
  • For a creamier mash, add extra butter or cream as desired.
  • The Worcestershire sauce adds depth, but can be omitted for a milder taste.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated well.
  • To save time, use pre-cooked or leftover mashed potatoes if available.
