Description

This Eggnog Hot Cocoa Mix recipe combines rich cocoa, warm spices, and creamy eggnog to create a comforting holiday drink that’s easy to prepare. With a homemade mix stored in your pantry, you can quickly whip up a festive hot cocoa that’s perfect for chilly evenings or holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Mix Ingredients

  • ½ cup (59 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup (62.5 g) confectioners’ sugar
  • ½ cup (34 g) powdered milk
  • 1 teaspoon espresso powder
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt

To Prepare Hot Cocoa

  • 1 cup eggnog, warmed (or half eggnog, half whole milk for lighter version)
  • 3 tablespoons eggnog hot cocoa mix
  • Whipped cream, for topping
  • Nutmeg, for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Whisk dry mix ingredients: In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, confectioners’ sugar, powdered milk, espresso powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, and kosher salt until completely combined and smooth.
  2. Store the mix: Transfer the blended cocoa mix to an airtight container or jar. Store it in a cool, dry place where it will keep fresh for up to one month.
  3. Warm the eggnog: Heat 1 cup of eggnog (or a mix of half eggnog and half whole milk for a lighter version) in a small saucepan over low heat or in the microwave until hot but not boiling.
  4. Combine mix and eggnog: Stir in 3 tablespoons of the prepared cocoa mix into the warmed eggnog until completely dissolved and smooth, ensuring no lumps remain.
  5. Garnish and serve: Pour the hot cocoa into a mug, top it with a generous dollop of whipped cream, and sprinkle a little nutmeg on top for extra festive flavor. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, substitute half of the eggnog with whole milk.
  • Store the dry mix in an airtight container to maximize shelf life.
  • Adjust the amount of cocoa mix to taste if you prefer a stronger or milder flavor.
  • Espresso powder enhances the cocoa flavor but can be omitted if unavailable.
  • Use fresh nutmeg for a more vibrant spice flavor when garnishing.
