Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Frying

  • Vegetable oil or shortening, about 1½ to 2 inches deep

For Serving (Optional)

  • Powdered sugar, for dusting
  • Granulated sugar, whipped cream, sliced strawberries, strawberry sauce, caramel sauce, or chocolate sauce for dipping

Instructions

  1. Mix dry ingredients: In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, salt, baking powder, and granulated sugar until well combined.
  2. Mix wet ingredients: In a separate mixing bowl, whisk the eggs, whole milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and blended.
  3. Combine wet and dry: Slowly add the dry ingredient mixture into the wet ingredients while whisking continuously until the batter is smooth and free of lumps.
  4. Prepare for frying: Transfer the batter into a squeeze bottle, piping bag, or resealable plastic bag with a small corner snipped off for easy dispensing.
  5. Heat oil: Pour vegetable oil into a deep skillet or frying pan to a depth of 1½ to 2 inches and heat it to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Pipe the fries: Carefully squeeze the batter into the hot oil in straight lines; use your finger or scissors to cut off the stream of batter. Fry as many fries as the oil can accommodate without overcrowding.
  7. Fry till golden: Let the fries cook for about 20 to 30 seconds until the bottom side is golden brown, then carefully flip to cook the other side evenly.
  8. Drain excess oil: Remove the cooked funnel cake fries using a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  9. Repeat frying: Continue to pipe and fry the remaining batter in batches until all fries are cooked.
  10. Serve: Serve the funnel cake fries hot, dusted with powdered sugar and optionally accompanied by granulated sugar, whipped cream, sliced strawberries, strawberry sauce, caramel sauce, or chocolate sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • Maintain oil temperature at 350°F (175°C) to ensure fries cook evenly and absorb minimal oil.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan to avoid lowering the oil temperature and soggy fries.
  • Use a squeeze bottle or piping bag for easy and uniform piping of the batter.
  • Drain funnel cake fries on paper towels promptly to remove excess oil for a crispier texture.
  • Feel free to add cinnamon or nutmeg to the batter for extra flavor.
  • Serve immediately for best texture and flavor as these fries lose crispness when cooled.
