Ingredients
Scale
Filling
- 1 lb Ground beef
- 1 large Onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves Garlic, minced
- 1 cup Breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup Milk
- 1 large Egg
- 1/4 tsp Ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp Ground allspice
- Salt and pepper to taste
Dumplings
- Wonton wrappers (about 40-50)
Broth and Vegetables
- 8 cups Chicken broth or beef broth
- 2 Carrots, sliced
- 2 Celery stalks, diced
- 1 Parsnip, diced (optional)
- 1/2 cup Chopped fresh parsley
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the filling: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, ground nutmeg, ground allspice, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly incorporated.
- Assemble the dumplings: Lay out a wonton wrapper on a clean surface. Place approximately a teaspoon of the meat filling in the center. Moisten the edges of the wrapper with a little water, then fold it into a triangle or rectangle shape, pressing the edges firmly to seal. Repeat this process until all the filling is used and the dumplings are formed.
- Simmer the broth and vegetables: In a large pot, bring the chicken or beef broth to a gentle simmer. Add the sliced carrots, diced celery, and diced parsnip if using. Let the vegetables cook until they are tender, about 10-15 minutes.
- Cook the dumplings: Carefully drop the prepared dumplings into the simmering broth in batches to avoid overcrowding. Cook for 8-10 minutes, or until the dumplings float to the surface and the filling is fully cooked through.
- Finish and serve: Season the soup with additional salt and pepper to taste. Stir in the chopped fresh parsley for brightness. Ladle the soup with dumplings into bowls, garnish with extra parsley if desired, and serve hot.
Notes
- Wonton wrappers can typically be found in the refrigerated section of Asian grocery stores or some supermarkets.
- For a vegetarian variation, substitute ground beef with finely chopped mushrooms or a plant-based meat alternative and use vegetable broth.
- The parsnip is optional but adds a subtle sweetness and depth to the broth.
- Ensure the broth remains at a gentle simmer while cooking dumplings to prevent them from breaking apart.
- Leftover dumplings can be frozen before cooking; just increase cooking time slightly when simmering from frozen.
