Description

This Quick Savory Beef and Broccoli recipe is a flavorful, homemade dinner ready in just 15 minutes. Tender slices of beef are marinated and stir-fried with fresh broccoli florets in a delicious garlic-ginger soy-based sauce, making it a perfect weeknight meal that’s both quick and satisfying.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef and Marinade

  • 1 pound flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce (30ml)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (8g) mixed with 2 tablespoons cold water

Vegetables

  • 4 cups fresh broccoli florets (about 300g)
  • Optional: red pepper flakes or fresh chili for heat

Sauce

  • 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce (60ml)
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce (30ml) or extra soy sauce if unavailable
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh grated ginger (optional)

Cooking Oil

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (30ml) for stir-frying

Instructions

  1. Slice the beef: Slice the beef thinly against the grain into strips approximately 1/4 inch thick to ensure tenderness after cooking.
  2. Marinate the beef: In a mixing bowl, combine the beef slices with 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 1 teaspoon sesame oil, and the cornstarch slurry. Toss thoroughly and let it marinate for 10 minutes to tenderize and flavor the meat.
  3. Prepare broccoli: Wash and cut broccoli into bite-sized florets. Peel and slice the thick stalks thinly if using to ensure even cooking.
  4. Make the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup soy sauce, oyster sauce, brown sugar, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Set this flavorful sauce mixture aside.
  5. Stir-fry broccoli: Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add broccoli and stir-fry for about 3 minutes until the florets turn bright green and are tender-crisp. Remove broccoli from the pan and set aside.
  6. Cook the beef: Add the remaining 1 tablespoon vegetable oil to the pan, increase heat to high. Stir-fry the marinated beef in a single layer for 2-3 minutes until browned and cooked through. If necessary, cook the beef in batches to avoid overcrowding.
  7. Combine and finish: Return the cooked broccoli to the pan with the beef. Pour the prepared sauce over and stir well to combine. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens and evenly coats both beef and broccoli.
  8. Adjust seasoning and add heat: Taste the dish and adjust seasoning if necessary. Add red pepper flakes or fresh chili to add a spicy kick if desired.
  9. Serve: Serve the savory beef and broccoli immediately over steamed rice or your choice of noodles for a hearty meal.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free version, substitute tamari or a gluten-free soy sauce for the regular soy sauce and ensure oyster sauce is gluten-free.
  • Beef slices should be very thin to cook quickly and stay tender.
  • If you prefer a milder dish, omit red pepper flakes or chili.
  • Cooking in batches prevents overcrowding and helps the beef brown properly.
  • Feel free to add sliced bell peppers or carrots for more color and nutrition.
