Smothered Hamburger Steak Recipe

  • Author: Lana
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

Smothered Hamburger Steak is a classic comfort food featuring juicy, seasoned hamburger patties smothered in a rich, creamy mushroom gravy made from cream of mushroom soup and milk. This hearty and quick dish is perfect for busy weeknights and pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles for a satisfying family meal.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder

For the Gravy

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp butter (optional, for extra richness)

Instructions

  1. Season and Form Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix thoroughly and shape the mixture into evenly sized hamburger patties.
  2. Cook Patties: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Place the patties in the skillet and cook until browned on both sides and cooked through, about 4-5 minutes per side. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Prepare Gravy: In the same skillet, add the cream of mushroom soup, milk, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir together well and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  4. Add Butter: For a creamier texture, stir in the butter and allow it to melt completely into the gravy.
  5. Combine Patties and Gravy: Return the cooked hamburger steaks to the skillet. Spoon the gravy over the steaks and let everything simmer together for a few more minutes to meld the flavors.
  6. Serve: Serve the smothered hamburger steaks hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite side dishes.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option; the flavor will differ but the gravy keeps it delicious.
  • Make ahead by cooking the steaks and storing them in the refrigerator for up to 2 days; reheat in the skillet with gravy.
  • Leftovers freeze well for up to 3 months; thaw and reheat on the stove.
  • Adding sautéed onions or mushrooms to the gravy provides extra flavor and volume.
  • For thicker gravy, add extra flour to your roux; for thinner gravy, add more broth or milk.
  • Don’t skip resting the patties after cooking to retain juiciness.
