Ingredients
Scale
Jalapeños
- 4 pieces Jalapeños (Adjust spice level by leaving ribs and seeds or removing them)
Breading
- 1 cup All-Purpose Flour (Substitute with gluten-free flour if needed)
- 1 cup Buttermilk (Regular milk can be used in a pinch)
- 1 large Egg (Use flaxseed meal or applesauce for a vegan alternative)
- 1 cup Panko Bread Crumbs (Regular breadcrumbs can be used but won’t yield the same crispiness)
- 0.5 cup Tempura Batter Mix (Can be omitted or replaced with more Panko)
- 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder (Fresh minced garlic can be substituted)
- 1 teaspoon Slap Ya Mama seasoning (Can be replaced with a Cajun mix or omitted for less spice)
- 1 teaspoon Black Pepper (Use white pepper for a subtler taste)
Frying
- 2 cups Vegetable Oil (Can be substituted with canola or peanut oil)
Instructions
- Preparation: Wash and slice the jalapeños into thin strips while wearing gloves to protect your skin from the heat.
- Heat Oil: Warm the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat until it shimmers and reaches approximately 350°F, indicating it’s ready for frying.
- Set Up Breading Stations: Arrange three separate bowls – one with all-purpose flour; the second with a mixture of whisked buttermilk and egg; the third with panko breadcrumbs, tempura batter mix, garlic powder, Slap Ya Mama seasoning, and black pepper combined.
- Coat Jalapeños: Dredge each jalapeño strip first in the flour, then dip into the buttermilk and egg mixture, and finally coat thoroughly with the breadcrumb mixture to ensure maximum crispiness.
- Fry Jalapeños: Carefully place the coated jalapeño strips into the hot oil and fry for 1-2 minutes on each side, until they turn golden brown and crispy.
- Drain and Serve: Remove the fries from the oil and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil before serving hot as a spicy snack or appetizer.
Notes
- Use gloves when handling jalapeños to avoid irritation from the capsaicin on your skin.
- Adjust the heat level by removing the seeds and ribs from the jalapeños for a milder flavor.
- Vegetable oil can be substituted with other high smoke point oils like canola or peanut oil.
- For a vegan alternative, replace the egg with flaxseed meal or applesauce and use plant-based milk instead of buttermilk.
- Tempura batter mix can be omitted; just increase the amount of panko crumbs for coating.
- Slap Ya Mama seasoning can be swapped with other Cajun or Creole seasonings, or omitted for less spice.
